What an evil spirit guardian taught me about the light

 February 25, 2026

The spirit world is a busy place, and all places have spiritual guardians. The ones I’ve encountered recently have been protecting their spaces. This time, however, I met my first evil guardian. But where was the light?

Meeting an evil spirit guardian

12:24pm, Monday, September 15. I’m at Irvine Park in Chippewa Falls, WI, on vacation with my husband and my dad. There’s a small grove of large pine trees, and it seemed a good spot to stand and talk with the land. I leave Rodger and dad on the path, and I go into the pine trees.

I have said my prayer and now I stand and I wait among the pines.

It’s silent.

I have an awareness of different spirits that are coming up and checking me out, but mostly it's just quiet and I don't perceive anything. After a long 60 seconds of silence, I sense is a darker energy that is floating more than it is human.

“That's because you have brought your family. Why do you not come by yourself?” The voice is ominous and dark, coming from just behind my left shoulder.

A ghost-like entity comes and stands in front of me. He starts my height, but grows and grows. He reminds me of the depiction of death from Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life. Except this spirit is all robe and no face or arms.

He must be, oh, 15, 20 feet tall. “Twenty-two, to be exact,” says the spirit. Thin. Black robe. Long black arms. An anthropomorphism of a pine tree, I would say.

“See what I have to share with you,” says the spirit, as he lifts me up. Up, up, I go, until I am at his eye level. He's about at the level of where the greenery is in the trees, and what I see makes me think of an Ewok village. That analogy offends this spirit, although it’s not my intention.

I'm assuming he is the guardian, although I have never encountered an evil guardian before.

“Are you the guardian of this land?” I inquire.

“I am the guardian. I am also the owner in this case. I am the overlord. I oversee all that is here. This is mine.”

Even evil guardians have light somewhere

All spaces have both light and dark over them, which leads me to question him. “Interesting. Where is your counterpart? Where is the lightness — the light that is also in this space?”

When I say that, he drops me to the ground. “How dare you! This is mine. There is no light.”

“Hmm. There is always light somewhere. All things have opposites.”

He bends over until his face is at my level. He is furious! The area where his face is is red and flame-like. “I am the lord here. There is none other.” His voice is tight and constricted.

Hmm. I shift my awareness, and then I see the light.

I notice dozens of small white beings at ground level, moving silently behind the trees. I would call them fairies, but there are no wings.

Light is always present, even among evil

This lesson comes to me:

Not all light needs to make itself known to have its presence and to provide what it does in a space. The light can still do its work, even if it is not seen by the darkness that is there. Sometimes it works surreptitiously in the background, still doing all that is good. That is how it is in this particular space. Thank you for perceiving and for being able to perceive. Let others know that this is one way that light works.

The light is always present. It may not been seen at first, and it may not be obvious, but it is always there. John 1:5, “And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness does not apprehended it.” Christ is the light, and he is everywhere. Even in the darkest places, Christ is there, and light is there. If you’re not able to see the light, shift your awareness. See what the Spirit will teach you about how to find the light.

And, if you are a light, take heart! Not all light needs to be up front, big and visible and seen. Some light works quietly in the background, unseen by most, but still doing good.
