Christ's Atonement is infinite
First, let’s start with two truths.
Truth #1: God created many worlds, many earths, not just the one we live on. And, these worlds are inhabited by others.
In Moses 1, in the Pearl of Great Price, God is speaking to Moses.
"And it came to pass, as the voice was still speaking, Moses cast his eyes and beheld the earth, yea, even all of it; and there was not a particle of it which he did not behold, discerning it by the Spirit of God.
And he beheld also the inhabitants thereof, and there was not a soul which he beheld not; and he discerned them by the Spirit of God; and their numbers were great, even numberless as the sand upon the sea shore.
And he beheld many lands; and each land was called earth, and there were inhabitants on the face thereof." (Moses 1:27-29
"And by the word of my power, have I created them, which is mine Only Begotten Son, who is full of grace and truth.
And worlds without number have I created; and I also created them for mine own purpose; and by the Son I created them, which is mine Only Begotten.
And the first man of all men have I called Adam, which is many." (Moses 1:32-34)
From these verses, we see that not only did God create innumerable worlds, but they are inhabited by other men, by other beings.
Truth #2: We live in a time of spiritual gathering.
This time we live in is called the dispensation of the fullness of times. This means that we are in the last period of time before the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.
"That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him." (Eph 1:10, KJV)
In our day, there are many who are looking for the truths taught in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In 2024, 308,000 people joined the church – the highest number of converts in 25 years.
If God has created worlds without number, and now is a time of gathering, let’s consider that there are beings in those other worlds and throughout the universe who are also seeking and being gathered. This leads us to the idea that Christ’s Atonement is for all beings, everywhere – it is infinite in scope.
In fact, Tad R Callister wrote a book titled The Infinite Atonement.
In this book, he provides eight specific reasons to support the idea that Christ's atonement can be considered infinite. I'm just going share this one little part.
It says, "Does the Savior's atonement extend beyond this world? Elder McConkie taught: "Our Lord's jurisdiction and power extend far beyond the limits of this one small earth on which we dwell. He is, under the Father, the creator of worlds without number. (Moses 1:33) And through the power of his atonement the inhabitants of these worlds, the revelation says, 'are begotten sons and daughters unto God' (D&C 76:24), which means that the atonement of Christ, being literally and truly infinite, applies to an infinite number of earths." (p. 87, italics in the original)
In the same book, Tad Callister, quotes from, at the time Elder Russell M. Nelson, who said "The mercy of the Atonement extends not only to an infinite number of people, but also to an infinite number of worlds created by him." (p. 89)
I think this is a beautiful truth, a beautiful thing to consider, that God has created all these worlds and he loves all of his creations, and they all need to be gathered back in. Christ is the one who makes that gathering possible.
I want to share a little story of a little part of what I guess that gathering might look like. This is my experience one morning.
Contact from a council of gods
About 7:30am. I come into my office to write, feeling a tugging to do so.
This tugging is the Spirit speaking to my heart, letting me know that someone has a message for me to receive. My first step is always to pray so that I am connected with Heavenly Father and am able to discern what I receive. After I pray, this is what I hear:
Greetings, Earth child!
The voice is big and booming. I know it's not Heavenly Father. He would never address me that way.
I sense a radio dial. I turn it, seeking for his true voice. However, this other voice is persistent, and puts itself back in front of me, on the channel again. I decide to listen and see where this goes.
The voice continues:
We are the council of the gods. Not the Most High God, but a lower council from another time. We have come to your planet to seek your help. We are stuck and lost. We know that there is a true light, but have been unable to find it. We have been deceived by many. Can you show us the way?
I don't respond, but stop to pray again, and to see if their intention is true.
As I start to talk with them, it becomes quickly apparent that they are not exactly what they say. They are a group of what seem to be children, young spirits, who are lost, trying to appear bigger and more well composed than they really are.
As I continue to interact with them, what first appeared as one large spirit now dismantles into many, many individual ones. Imagine a cheerleading squad in a pyramid where the individuals are all coming down from the pyramid. That's kind of what this was like.
There is a smaller group of these individual spirits at the front, and these are the ones I communicate with. They were, in fact, being honest when they approached me. They were looking for Light and Truth.
Directing them to the missionaries
As I speak with these spirits, I start to teach them of the truth that they are seeking. The majority chose to learn of Christ. But, a much smaller percentage of this group were dark and chose the dark. As we continued to interact, those who chose the dark simply shrunk and vanished.
As always, whether in this world or in the spirit world, we have the ability to choose for ourselves.
I taught those who wanted the Light a bit about Christ and choosing to follow him, and connected these spirits with a large group of missionary spirits.
I am humbled and grateful for this opportunity to serve in this way. I know of the Truth for which they are seeking - it is Jesus the Christ, the Redeemer. His Atonement is eternal and for all, not just those who are now living or who lived on this earth. It is encompassing for all throughout the spirit world who are searching as well.
Last night, as I was preparing to record the podcast, my husband asked, "Why do they come to YOU?"
I thought, well, that's a fair question, and I have asked the Lord that myself when I've had a prior interaction. In some cases it's because in the premortal realm I agreed to help these other spirits.
I also know that this is part of my calling and part of the gifts that I have been given. I am here as a disciple of Christ and as a missionary, and so I have the ability to commune with the spirit world. And to share these things so that those in the spirit world can come and learn of the gospel and that I can share them here on earth.
And that the things that we write and share on earth can also go out throughout the universe. It's a gift and a purpose that I have been given to be able to do this work. I'm grateful for this blessing and to have this gift and to be able to share this knowledge of the light and truth of Christ with those who are seeking.
One of my favorite promises from Jesus in the scriptures is that if we but ask in faith, we will find that for which we seek.
Whatever it is that you are searching for, I promise that as you do so in faith, trusting Christ, he will lead you to it.
