How does God bless us?

 October 19, 2022

Does it sometimes feel like you could use a few more of God's blessings in your life? Do you know how God blesses us? It's not complicated. Let's learn how to receive God's blessing, and also how we block those blessings.

How to Receive God's Blessings

The most important thing to understand is that God wants to bless us. He delights in it! As our loving Father in Heaven, his desire is for us to grow and learn and to experience joy.

Adam fell that men might be; and men are, that they might have joy. (2 Ne 2:25)

You naturally want to bless those you love, right? God wants the same for us. But for us to truly get value from his blessings, there are stipulations to receiving them. It's the same for all of the commandments and all of the natural laws.

There are many things we can do to receive God's blessings. These include being grateful for what we already have, keeping the commandments, and giving.

I'd like to share this poem I received where God taught me a few important things about receiving blessings from him.

In this poem, we learn these two things:

  1. How to receive God's blessings
  2. What blocks us from receiving God's blessings

Read the poem to see if you can find these simple teachings.

Glory, Power and Honor

Blessings from above are yours,

But you must seek and ask.

Only so much comes for free,

But more is within your grasp.

We want to bless, we want to give

More than you now do know.

Seek after us and you will see

That which is meant for thee.

The clouds are full of light and love,

The rain comes down to bless.

Mercy is a gift from God,

It is a form of dress.

Drop the cloak of pride and see,

Love is all around.

Men who humble themselves before me

Have all that I can see.

Glory and goodness and honor abound

When you have eyes to see.

Open your heart, untether your tongue,

All is goodness with Me.

Pride is a cloak, it blocks the heart

And makes one unable to receive.

It thinks itself better than all,

And has no eyes for Me.

Glory and honor and power are thine,

When pride rules the day.

But remember my child, those things are mine

And not for giving away.

I stand in my strength, which multiples,

Unto all who love my name.

Glory and power and honor are mine,

And yours when we are the same.

Come unto me, and you will see

That which you do not know.

I’ll set you free, have glory through me,

And peace like waters will roll.

Do not despair, the time is now

Although the world looks bleak.

I am always, one and all,

And the world was made by me.

Think not that I cannot and do not rule

All that I have made.

All things, child, are in my hands,

Made to glorify me.

Do your work, the time has come

To let your light shine forth.

Fear no more what Satan may say,

His words are of no worth.

They don't have power to come to pass,

Only to sway your heart.

You have the choice, the power is yours,

Take control, go forth.

How God Blesses Us

Did you get what God tells us about how simple it is to receive blessings from Him? The most important thing we need to do is ask.

Yes, just ask God for the blessings you desire! Seek after them.

In fact, this is one of the most oft repeated things in the scriptures - to ask. Christ tells his disciples over and over again in the New Testament to ask, seek, and knock. And importantly, that when we DO ask, we will also find.

The second thing we're told to do is to seek after God. Ask for what you want, and then seek after God for what He has for you.

What Blocks Us From Receiving God's Blessings

God is all about togetherness and unity. About becoming one. Anything that separates and creates division will block God's blessings. He says this pretty clearly in this poem!

"Pride is a cloak, it blocks the heart, And makes one unable to receive."

Pride is a huge stumbling block for us as human beings. If you've been seeking and asking for blessings, but haven't received them, it might be that there is some pride getting in the way.

Pride can be tricky. It can be difficult to acknowledge within us. Pride shows up as hardness, inflexibility, unwillingness to bend or change. Sometimes, it's all I can do to say that I am willing to be willing to change!

Pride wants us to claim things for ourselves, instead of acknowledging God's hand in all things. The glory is God's, not ours. This is how we receive God's blessings is our lives.

Pride is what was behind Lucifer's fall to become Satan. He was full of light, but wanted glory for himself. Jesus was humble, and offered himself, but the glory would still be God's.

If we seek for blessings, but want them to build ourselves up for our own good, then we're seeking out of pride. We'll find destruction and hurt instead of peace and goodness.

God's Blessings Bring Peace

I love the promises and reassurances that God gives in this poem. He reminds us that He made the world, and all things. Through him, we find peace. He is in control and over all things.

This world is a pretty tumultuous place right now. I'm grateful for the peace that comes to my heart when I seek after God.

This Poem Is One of God's Blessings

This poem is an example of one of the ways that God blesses us. Like all of the poems on this site, I received this by direct revelation. You can read more about the process here.

God wants to communicate with us. He wants us to come to him and to learn from him. This brings us the peace we seek that we can't find anywhere else in the world.

In this case, I had been reading the scriptures and praying. I had already had a conversation with God, and Heavenly Mother. This is what is meant by "us" in the poem. God is not only the masculine, but also the feminine aspect. Nothing is complete without both. What this masculine and feminine aspect are actually like in the spirit world I don't know. I tend to experience them as two separate individuals, but that's simply my experience.

Reading the scriptures, praying, and meditating are all ways we can "seek after" God and "Come unto me," like he says in this poem. As I sat to meditate after conversing with God, this poem started.

Think about your own life and blessings. What blessings can you be thankful for? What blessings would you like? What blessings does God have in store for you that perhaps you haven't even considered? Seek and ask, and he will reveal them to you.

P.S. - And that simple drawing for this post? It's one I did that depicts how we are the ones who either allow God to bless us, or block his blessings.
